Apple Health: what Longnote reads, what it writes, how to change your mind

Read-only unless you say otherwise. The categories Longnote can read, the one opt-in that writes, and where every switch lives.

Updated

Connecting

Settings → Apple Health → Connect. iOS shows a sheet with every category Longnote can ask for, each with its own switch; grant some and refuse others as you like. Longnote can read sleep, steps and exercise minutes, workouts, heart-rate variability and resting heart rate, mindful minutes, cycle data, and the symptom types Health offers, each of which has a matching preset.

What happens with what is read

It is processed on your iPhone and shown beside your own entries: in the Journal’s key indicators and in matching trackers, and, with Pro, in Patterns comparisons with your other trackers. Nothing read from Health is sent to us, because there is no Longnote server, and entries that came from Health are never included in backups. The one exception that leaves the phone is a workout route’s map area, below.

The one thing that writes

Save symptoms to Health is an opt-in switch under Settings → Apple Health, off by default. With it on, each symptom you log, on a tracker Health has a symptom type for, is written into Health as a symptom record (which symptom, when, and how severe if you rated it), labelled as coming from Longnote and kept in step as you edit or delete entries. Notes, photos and body-atlas locations are not written. You can see and delete the records in the Health app; turning the switch off stops further writes at once and asks whether the symptoms already saved should stay in Health or be removed.

One connected detail

If a workout from Health has a recorded route, Longnote can fetch Apple Maps tiles for the area to draw a small map beside it, and look up the icon of the app that recorded it. Both are covered by one switch, on by default: Settings → Privacy & data → Workout maps & app icons.

Changing your mind

iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Longnote lists every category with separate read and write switches. Changes apply immediately. The guide on Apple Health and third-party apps explains the rules every app has to follow.

Questions about apple health

  • What does Longnote read from Apple Health?

Only what you approve, category by category, when you connect Health under Settings → Apple Health. The categories Longnote can ask for: sleep, steps and exercise minutes, workouts, heart-rate variability and resting heart rate, mindful minutes, cycle data (flow and period days), and the symptom types that Health offers, each of which has a matching Longnote preset.

What is read is processed on your iPhone and shown beside your own entries, in the Journal’s key indicators and on charts. Nothing read from Health is sent to us, because there is no Longnote server, and entries that came from Health are never included in backups. One detail does leave the phone: if a workout has a recorded route, the app asks Apple Maps for tiles of the area it covers, which you can switch off under Settings → Privacy & data → Workout maps & app icons.

  • Does Longnote write anything to Apple Health?

Not by default. The Health connection is read-only until you turn on Save symptoms to Health under Settings → Apple Health. With that on, each symptom you log, on a tracker Health has a symptom type for, is written into Apple Health as a symptom record: which symptom, when, and how severe if you rated it. Records are labelled as coming from Longnote and kept in step as you edit or delete entries. Notes, photos and body-atlas locations are not written.

You can see, filter and delete them in the Health app at any time. Turning the switch off asks whether the symptoms Longnote saved should stay in Health or be removed; your entries in Longnote are not touched either way.

  • How do I change or revoke Health access?

In iOS, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Longnote (or the Health app → your profile → Apps and Services → Longnote). Every category has its own switch, separately for reading and for writing. Changes apply immediately.

Values already read stay in the matching Longnote trackers on your device until you archive or delete those trackers, or use Delete all data. Nothing was ever sent off the phone, so there is nothing elsewhere to revoke.

  • Why don't my Health values appear on the charts?

Connecting Apple Health, reading the categories you approve, and seeing the values in the Journal’s key indicators and in the trackers that match them are all free. A symptom’s own chart shows that symptom only; Health values are not drawn over it. Comparing Apple Health with your trackers, for example sleep hours against headache intensity in Patterns, is one of the Pro features. The data is on your phone either way; what Pro adds is the comparison.
